I have started this thread to get feedback from skin authors who would like to see a specific thing skinnable that is not currently skinnable, or not skinnable in the way they would like it to be.

Please post specifics, so "Allow all colours to be changed" is not good feedback.  "Allow me to change the text colour on control X" is.

So please be very specific in your requests stating what part, what you would like to be able to do and most importantly why.

Pictures would be especially helpful.

ditto on ie8. i would like to see the all programs button (in the startmenu) to possbily have animation available for vista.

i would like to see the folders bar in vista to lose the blue font. (make it changeable)

i would like to skin and or remove the graphics with the flash animation in the explorer_info_vst bar. and in the control panel.

i would like to see a higher frame rate for userpane and startmenu button animations (i know i have brought this up before, but there IS a frame limit, as vista has a pixel height limit, and once you go over a certain amount of frames you get white pixelations around the animation) I still want to see a max frame limit for these, so we know how far we can go. this would save hours of work.

i would like the task arrow background to be skinned.

currently in vista, the minimized window buttons stretch, making it hard to do normal buttons.  I would like them to maintain the size they are made to and not stretch.  They stretch because the min_window_caption follows the height guide of the titlebar, so the min_window_caption need to have their own height, and this would stop the minimized window buttons from stretching out of shape and proportion.

i find the blur round edge values in perpixel frames very annoying and not even sure what purpose it serves.

thanks for this post, i hope my list is useful to you.

For me is simple....

some of this has already been said....

IE8 Tabs are not skinnable.

The background area on the favorites menu in explorer is not skinnable (see #1), so when you try to skin the favorites menu, it looks like crap. I've noticed that many skinners just leave this section white because of this issue.

The text on the buttons for the Command Bar is not changable (see #2). I'd love to at least be able to lose the shadow on the text.

The text color on the folders menu button needs to be changable (see #3).

I would like to have ALL the states for the start button capable of being animated, not just the mouseover.

A seperate image for the start button for the vertical taskbar (see #4), so we can center it or not, depending on the blind.

The user picture background isnt skinnable (see #5), I usually just get rid of it because it will not match.

The flashing button for the vertical taskbar needs a seperate image.

The text color settings for the pressed, disabled and mouseover states on the Toolbar Style Menubar Button are mixed up in SKS6 and SKS7.

Color Burn and Color Dodge would be nice to have in the blending options for layers.

It would be nice to be able to move the Start Menu Log Off Buttons independantly from the Search Bar on the Start Menu.

The Search Icon in the Start Menu Search Bar will not stay centered in the search bar if the bottom section of the Start Menu is too tall (see #6).

Currently, the text for headerbars and buttons can be recolored, but they use the window text color for certain apps like Firefox (buttons) and Thunderbird (headerbar). It would be nice if the text color settings for these things would stay consistent with the skinners settings.

BTW- thanks for this thread. It's a great idea!

When making skins I have many different disires. Now, i forgot about what I want. But if you ask about present times, i have only one request. Skinstudio have many options for making skins, but, practically we can't use even 50% of this options. coz from some options windows slow down, or do not show elements that we're include in skin, and usually i must use only setting and images formats that use default windows skin. so, i always stay between two choices - making creative skin, or quality and non bug skin. Both, quality and creative it's very hard for realization. In concept, skinstudio and windowblinds, it's very powerfull tools for windows skining, but it's needed in little improvements of options that it's already have. But I understand, many bugs, it's not WB problems, but problems of windows that have many weak places in interface, and problems of 3d party applications. And, if talk about future... I think, after analizing what people likes and wants, in future skins must became less detailed and more minimalistic, but, we're all understand, that, if all skins became minimalistic, it's all will be similar, and boring. And it's can be solved only if minimalistic images will be compared with wide quantity of different visual effect, fadeinfadeout, layer mixing options, like multiply or screen effects, swirl etc and it's only basical type of effects, if think about it more, may be 100ds of different effects can be created. But I think it will require to change whole platform of WB.

Xiandi, fantastic points. All of them.

or not skinnable in the way they would like it to be

Overlays on "all" buttons. Taskbar, more than anything. My ultimate wish, would be to have animated overlays, but I don't see that happening for at least another 20 years or at all.

I would like to see transparancy on the task bvar and start menu in Win 7 on pcs that dont have Aero running.

Explorer BGs should be able to use JPGs and PNGs instead of BMPs to reduce overall file size.  (If you plan on using a non-repeating image).

IE8 should be completely skinnable.  This is the reason why I still have IE7.

We should have a skinnable BG for message boxes instead of just being limited to a single color.  (However, it might result in poor contrast when trying to read text.)

The skin recoloring should be more specific, such as excluding the min/max & close buttons. (i.e. When I change "Glassphire" from blue to green, the red "X" turns purple. The button should remain red regardless of the skin color.)

Recolor X Button

The button "glow" image should automatically recalculate itself to the size of the push button instead of being the same dimensions of the "glow" image itself.

Glow doesn't stretch

The button glow should work on ALL push buttons.  The push buttons on web browsers don't glow.

One more thing, the "Folders" pane in Vista should be skinnable as well, just like "Favorite Links".

That's all i have for now.

I havent tried this myself but cant that be solved with masks in SKS?

on Oct 06, 2009

HSL recoloring lets you recolor a single color in a skin thus not affecting items of a different color like the close button.

not sure if 7 kept that feature and it doesn't work well in skins with gradients or very vivid existing default color schemes.

I think it might be beneficial also to have a separate image for the start button for the top taskbar. I mean, the top taskbar itself has its own image, right?

I agree with everyone else on this one. Especially skinning IE8 and having transparency in the navigation pane in Vista Explorer. I'd also like to see:

WMP 11 and 12 skinning.

Seperate "basic" taskbar/startmenu/pop up menu images for when the DWM can't run (in Vista).

Transparency  in Vista window preiew borders (non-captioned window edge)

Ability to not have a gap between the edge of pop up menu background and the menu item.

Glass areas in Vista still go black when maximized where window borders don't. I'd also like to see an option to have Windows AND the taskbar go opaque when maximized (With the window colour and the reflection map like in aero)

If you notice the back/forward buttons are too far down so they overlap the window border. Could you fix it so that it's more like this:  in aero (<--) there's a nice gap between the the buttons and the bottom edge of the titlebar.

I'd also like an option to have the titlebar image stretch vertically in windows explorer instead of having seperate images for the glass toolbar and borders.

Have an option not to use "glass" window border images around glass menubars.

"glass" toolbar background.

Skin the scrollbars on Fences using the "glass" scrollbar images.

I'm using Vista at the moment so all the problems I refer to are with Vista (some may also appear in 7).
